Pokie Player Steals From Employer to Fund HabitAn avid pokie player has been sentenced to at least two years in jail for taking over $800,000 from her employer to fund her gambling habit. The player, Leanne Michelle Scott, recently plead guilty in Adelaide Magistrates Court to forty one counts of theft. The gambler admitted to stealing from two of her employers to play the pokies for over seven years.
Scott knew that she was going to jail and she wanted to show her case in the public eye so other problem gamblers would see how far an addiction can take you. Scott stated: “Until this happened, I’ve never been in trouble with the law. I’m not here to make excuses or ask for any sympathy. I just want to warn people that this can happen to anyone.”
Scott commented that she wants to ask the hotels that why, every time she was gambling and losing heavily, that she was never approached by an employee to ask about a gambling problem. Scott stated: “No-one, not once, every approached me to ask me if I had a problem even though the staff knew I had just an average job on an average pay.”
The mom of two was given a two year non parole term but they did spare the gambler some as they did not ask her to repay the amount she took from her employers. The Magistrate Bob Harrap stated the Scott was losing out from her offense. He stated: “Upon your release from custody, you will find yourself without employment and will struggle to find work and will not have a house to go back to. I accept that. I am particularly conscious of the impact upon your relationship with you daughter.”Harrap understood that Scott would never be able to pay the money back so he punished the offender as he saw fit.
